What is acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture has been part of Eastern medicine for thousands of years, and is used to restore balance and well-being by promoting self-healing and natural pain relief.

Very fine sterile needles are used at specific points on the body to access the vital energy/qi of the body and so alleviate symptoms and re-harmonise bodily processes.

Your whole health, mind and body, is considered before a specific treatment is recommended, as the focus is on the root causes of your symptoms and on restoring overall harmony. For this reason many people also use acupuncture as a preventative treatment, to maintain good health into the future.

How does it work?

Your body has a system of vital energy/qi which should flow smoothly and freely, nourishing the entire mind and body.

However, this energy can often be depleted or obstructed, and the body’s equilibrium is thrown out of balance, resulting in pain, illness or emotional issues.

The acupuncture needles are used to access certain points on the body, to manipulate and regulate your energy/qi, so helping to restore balance and promote physical and emotional harmony.

Although traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Eastern principles of well-being, it is playing an increasing role in the Western health-care system, and is used by the NHS for lower back pain, osteoarthritis of the knee, migraine/headaches, nausea etc.

Its effects are increasingly being understood by conventional medicine; research has shown acupuncture’s clinical effects of stimulating levels of endorphins and serotonin for natural pain relief, as well as affecting levels of specific hormones, prostaglandins, etc, and evidence of its effectiveness in treating certain conditions is growing all the time.

Information on current scientific research into the effectiveness of acupuncture is available at the British Acupuncture council website www.acupuncture.org.uk
